Brydges Centre Projects
Here at Brydges we are involved in more than just housing. Through our Skills Training Centre and each of the homes across the country, we have established childcare facilities, community engagement and development programs, handicrafts and skill learning courses, as well as early childhood education programs to assist the poorest and most needy communities around Kenya.
Several of the courses offered by Brydges at their Skills Training Centre (for 20 girls each year) are:
- Tailoring and dressmaking
- Entrepreneurship
- Computer studies
- Business english
- Catering and housekeeping
- Hairdressing and beauty
- Income generating courses including making shampoo, yoghurt, peanut butter, handcrafts, and glass painting
Income Generating Projects
In a move towards self-sustainability, Brydges Centre has begun to increase activity in 'home grown' solutions. In an effort to raise substantial income to supplement sponsorship and wellwishes we have embarked on the following:
- Making and selling handicrafts and artifacts created by the children
- Producing peanut butter and selling jars at the markets
- Creating soaps and shampoos for sale
- Children at Brydges Centre B (older girls) are currently involved in rearing chickens and using their eggs to supplement the food budget and also to provide an increased protein diet for the children
Brydges Centre also plans to establish a business centre to enhance the opportunities we have, partiularly in the handicrafts area. This business centre will market the range of products that are created here at Brydges and in particular, the girls present at the Skills Training Centre.
